Can’t Stop Chronicles: Remya Rajasekharan, Data Analyst

Remya Rajasekharan, Data Analyst

What would any company be without its amazing team members? Here at AdAction, we’ve developed a team of incredible people who use their unique qualities and strengths to make their own impact on the business.

Who are these people, you ask? We’re going to introduce them to you in our series Can’t Stop Chronicles, to help put a face to the driving force behind our “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” motto. For our next spotlight, we got to know a little more about Remya Rajasekharan, Data Analyst.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I work with internal teams to develop rule-based algorithms to mitigate any fraudulent conversions. On a daily basis, I interact with stakeholders to translate business problems into data solutions through problem formulation, writing SQL and Python scripts, and deploying code to production. A major part of my role involves automating reports for our internal teams. I work closely with our Media, AdGem, and Core Business teams.

What do you like most about your role?

I get to work with different teams and learn different sides of the business. I like that my role allows me to do what I like, including digging into data to find actionable insights. It’s satisfying when someone tells me that an automation of a report saved them time in their day-to-day.

What are the top three skills a Data Analyst should have?

From a technical standpoint, they should be analytically inclined and know statistics, SQL, and Python. However, I think the most important skill a Data Analyst should have is being able to understand all aspects of a project before diving in. Being able to identify the purpose, who needs the results, and the overall business impact is extremely important. To do that, don’t be afraid to ask questions. You can have all the technical skills but if you don’t understand the “why,” you won’t be successful.

Is there a skill or something new you’d like to learn this year?

I’d love to expand my SQL skills, but I’m also looking to improve my communication skills so I can deliver more digestible results for the internal teams I work with.

What’s your favorite thing about working at AdAction?

I like that I get to work with multiple teams and collaborate with different people. Even in a remote setting, I never feel out of the loop. The Tech team is always looking to help each other out and develop new solutions. It’s fun looking at data and brainstorming a new idea or solution with my team. Since I get to help other teams solve problems, my work feels very meaningful.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned over your past two years at AdAction?

Knowing the “why” of a project before getting started — communication with all stakeholders is key. Also being able to deliver results in the least ambiguous, most impactful way.

How do you keep a healthy work-life balance?

I’m not a morning person, so I start work a little later than most and stop around 4:30 so I can spend time with my family. Then once everyone goes to sleep, I work for a few hours at night. Not having to commute to the office has also given me more time to spend with my family in the morning.

What do you like to do outside of work?

My son and I got into gardening last year and grew vegetables to cook with. This year we also rented a community garden plot. We also like hiking and getting outside. We love to travel, so every year after we visit family in India we try to visit a different country on our way back to Colorado. Some of our favorite stops have been London, Scotland, and Iceland… it’s a magical place.

Is there a movie, book, or TV show universe you’d like to live in and why?

I really love the “Harry Potter” series. I’ve always wanted to receive a letter from Hogwarts. Now that my son is reading the books, it’s been fun to get back into them.
